Good Reading

Now that the first week is done and benchmark assessments have been performed, the students are ready to start reading instruction.  They are split up into groups based on the skills they still need to learn.  No matter which group they're in or which book they're reading, they will all be expected to use strategies for good reading.

Strategies for good reading ensure that the kids are thinking about what they read while they're reading.  They set the kids up before they even start reading by asking them to access prior knowledge and make predictions.  While the kids are reading, they help with comprehension by giving them guidelines for how to think and ask questions of themselves and of the teachers.  They also expect the kids to utilize what they've learned after they're done reading.

It will take a while for the students to become proficient at using these strategies for good reading, but if you help by reinforcing them at home, it will make each child a better reader and help them continue to think about how to read and learn!
